push/FOLD is a multi-tiered dance/arts company founded by multidisciplinary artist and composer-choreographer Samuel Hobbs. Dedicated to developing community power through arts and movement education, support, and advocacy, push/FOLD performs and teaches both nationally and internationally, working with professional artists, companies, universities, schools, students, presenters, and foundations. Combining athletics and dance, abstract storytelling, and immersive soundscapes, push/FOLD’s body of work highlights their commitment to high-caliber movement training devoted to the health of our community, audiences, dancers, and students. Our ongoing programming includes masterclasses, workshops, presentations, student programming, dance-for-film, virtual and evening-length productions, artist-talks, and our annual Union PDX – Festival of Contemporary Dance.
Established in 2019, the Union PDX – Festival of Contemporary Dance presents artists creating contemporary work in any dance style, genre, or tradition world-wide, curated through an open-application process by a panel of professional artists. Created as a platform for supportive cross-pollination in the Pacific Northwest dance community, the Union PDX festival breaks down barriers for boundary-pushing dance artists, and offers important artistic and administrative resources and opportunities to address major needs for professional artists—visibility, opportunity, education, and tangible resources.
